Why in the world now instead of page not found I'm redirected to open dns search engine's page with lots of results that I don't care about.
what's changed online?

Because you probably now have opendns as your dns server.

      It is a great service.

It means someone on your network set your dns servers to opendns's or your ISP switched to opendns.

It really is a good DNS alternative to your ISPs own DNS.
If you are getting errors though, flush your DNS.

Open DNS is a fantastic tool for web browsing. Instead of using the dns your internet provider gives you, you use a system that virtually seems like it caches every site visited by anyone.

Living in australia i have found opendns to be my best net friend. They just seem to load pages quicker if they update their domains or nameservers

      Thank you Kindly,

I second that. (My ISP) Virgin Media only provide 4MB Connections in my area, with 7 other computers hooked up at our house, the 'monthly usage' gets eaten up pretty quickly making the simplest websites such as Google take forever to fully load. but with Open DNS, our connection speed has skyrocketed. I did a test-run on an old Dell, 10mps Ethernet card, win95 etc.. 4 YouTube videos, Vlexo, Tyreus, BatMNet, Davey Online open in Firefox. No lag at all. It's quite extraordinary how Open DNS provide such awesome services :)

Yup. I use opendns on all my networks. Even have both servers we use here (quad and deuce) setup to use OpenDNS's dns servers. :)
