Im gonna post this question to the community since Vlexo is nothing without its users.

I have been talking to the tech support for the server about a few things and what I've realized is that as time moves on software changes more and more. The thing about the server is that with centos (our operation system) the base software for it is fixed for the version of centos thats installed. As new software comes out, that software is going to depend on newer versions of the base software. Anyways theres no easy way to upgrade from our Centos 4.8 to the newest Centos 5.4 so to be able to upgrade the server needs to have a fresh install. That means the entire server wiped clean then reinstalled. Its a little complicated but all accounts on the server would be backed up and moved to another server for safe keeping then all moved back to the freshly installed server and put back in its place. Should all be safe.

The downside of this is that there would be about a day or so of server downtime as it get wiped, installed, setup, and account moved back and unpacked.

If all goes well the server would be better then ever. Faster, safer, cleaner, more unicorn stickers on the server case, etc. You get the gist.

So, question is, are you all okay with that period of downtime?

Im fine if two things are possible:
      • You let us know when this will happen (not that you wouldnt :P)
      • Would it be possible to mass modify the DNS settings so it displays a Server Maintenace page hosted elsewhere (i.e. where vlexo.com lives) so people dont just see a dead page and get confused?
On the same topic, would it be possible to move the forum to that vlexo.com server, as when the server went down for maintenance vlexo.com lived but not the forums. Originally I thought Jon bought the other server so that people can still use the forums if the server goes down.

The hosting elsewhere for small pages such as above will soon be apearing on other hosted serevrs (mine to be exact) currenly we are making a backup site that will be a "Status" page. This will help for users to see what is going on a bit easier. You do have to note as well for us to post on a server error, we have to be online before the users check. Sometimes this isn't possible. However we will have a "Server status" bar that will indicate either green or red when vlexofree is up or down.

Eli has outlined in another post regarding the vlexo.com server.

As for putting the domains on the vlexo.com server; the problem I have with that is that theres no way for me to be able to generate backups for accounts on there so that worries me. Also to be able to do anything new to the account it has to be up to date on payments and... the account is $21.98 past due.. and I dont want to have to pay that..

      Thank you Kindly,

No offence to Matty intended, but I would rather that you own the server, so we dont have an issue like what we did when the forum was not hosted by us recently.

Well thats not going to happen again since I moved all our domains over to this one server (except vlexo.com. Jon still owns that and wont give it up.). Unless of course Jon doesnt pay this server bill and our server gets suspended. That would suck. But I believe the server is on automatic billing now.

Okay. I knew this was the problem with the server but I wanted tests to be run first before I made it official. The server only have 2GB of memory and thats not enough for as many accounts as we have on here so its causing this downtime and horrible hosting experience. So I'm going to move VlexoFree over to Mattys server (first im going to secure it up a bit).

I really wouldn't think of this as a problem. This is more of an upgrade for VlexoFree members ;)

PS: I'm only moving those people who have already shown they comply with the new vlexofree. More incentive to for members to move over now!

To be honest i don't have problems with the current server apart with the downtime. Do your datacenter have an upgrade policy? If you are leasing teh server in the data center you can simply just upgrade the technology at the same price for the current server. Going to matts server seem a little bit unprofressionl

Its not my server to start adding upgrade to the bill. It would be an extra $20 a month for more ram. I dont pay for the bill and I dont have access to billing info.

Other then, that the forums and vlexofree are all already moved over to the new server. :P

That was a bit silly, the server you tansfer 2 does have the exact configuration as the one before. The last one had /home partion. This is were our files are stored before you transfered. Since this transfer i've found i can not create subdomains in my special folder anymore /home/Username/PublicDomains/. It was looking for that partion and now it is default 2 /home/username/Public_html/PublicDomains. This may have affected other things as well. I help you guys out looking out by looking for more fault since you transfered.

You shouldn't notice any difference from this move. Your account has yet to be transfered since you havent posted that you're ready to be checked off.

I probably disabled the ability to mount domains outside your public_html folder.
