Hey there all :)

I was just wondering, what does everyone think about using Live USB Keys in a working environment.

I am intending on helping at a school with *very* limited funds, and I was thinking it may have been an idea to do the following:
  • Replace some of the staff laptops with live usb keys with Fedora pre-installed and configured.
  • Centralise software and management so that sign-on is simplified and reliable.
  • Enable staff to use software on the Live USB key at home.
This is still all purely hypothetical - I may not even be able to take on this project - but I want to perform some inquiries beforehand.

I've found that the best size is between 2GB-4GB for keys; It gives them enough room for the OS and some files, (although most will be held on the server).

Any thoughts are appreciated :)

Regards,
Joe

Hm...That's kind've tough doing Live USB keys. It might be better if you install Fedora directly on the laptop. Then use Samba and the server for remote access to apps (or something like that). One of the school districts in my city have a solution that you can use the application on a web browser. I forgot the company though.

I hope you don't plan having a usb on each machine because that would be bad. People could steal them easily. I use a piece of software from Symantec. I think it's called "Ghost". It's nice because I can just network boot computers and flash an image onto it with settings already there. So it's very fast. If you have Cat5e and a fast enough router. It takes about 7 minutes to install Windows XP on a system.
