What version of Linux would run fine on my old Compaq Presario 5140.

I believe stats currently are
Windows 98
8GB Hardrive(I can run flash drive or upgrade of hard drive at a later time)
256 mb Ram (We might of upgraded I'm going off the original specs, might be 512)

I heard Ubuntru and Kbruntu would work, also Android x86, but as I might not be running it for networking, the android x86 would be worthless as its just the Phone OS ported with a working app store, If it was the Android on the new Netbooks that are coming out it would be different.
I will try to provide you with quick support!

If you are good with linux and want a distro that you have complete control over I'd go with ArchLinux.

If you want an "install and go" type of distro then Try XUbuntu. Dont use Ubuntu or Kubuntu, KDE and Gnome are pretty heavy, XFCE is I think the lightest DE for the ubuntu variants.

Here are some links to different distrubitions of Linux. Since the operating systems of Linux are free it is possible to download the iso-file of each distribution, burn cd's and dvd's and try witch version works the best on the system.

There are also some very small versions of Linux available. Since the computer works with Windows 98 the system might work better with a small distribution. Another possibility is to use an old version of a distribution. It seems handy to back up the Windows 98 version on an external disk and to keep the original installation cd of Windows 98 nearby to be able to install Windows 98 if needed.

Small versions of Linux are TinyMe and Tiny Core Linux 3.0 / 3.1 RC2

Agreed about the advice about Ubuntu. My experience is that Ubuntu can work a bit slow on some simple systems compared to Windows 7 and other Linux distributions.

I would say go for something like puppy linux or damn small linux
However these distros don't look as nice as others such as OpenSUSE or Ubuntu
You could go for Ubuntu netbook remix as it is designed for slower and less capable machines/netbooks

      Hello,
my favourite linux version is Ubuntu. I think it´s very resource-efficent. It works with Gnome. There exists also a version with KDE, it´s called Kubuntu.
      You can try it.
In the newest version, there is a little problem with Intel processors.

      Kind regards

Ya, Ubuntu 10.04 has many bugs even if its LTS... I lost my grub once upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 which was easy to correct... But during my update from 9.10 to 10.04, It was bit difficult to repair...

I was lot happier with 9.04 itself...

With great power comes great responsibility

I have heard a few positive reviews about openSuse.

No idea about it's use of resources though.

Is there any Studio Linux's that would run on this? Such as Ubuntu Studio.

I enjoy messing around in programs such as gimp, but also using audacity type software.
